Teachers talk favorite duties

Which duty is your favorite, and why?

This year, teachers have had more out-of-class responsibilities, such as commons duty and restricted study, than ever before. Here’s what they had to say about their favorites:

Mr. Chandler

Science Teacher
I don’t think I have a favorite duty.  I don’t like duties.  They take away from time when I could be doing things that have to do with teaching.

Mr. Oneschuk

Band/Music Teacher
I would say media center is [my favorite duty.]  It’s a place of study, and it’s great that students can get work done, and so can teachers. I think I like it too because the quietness is a catalyst for learning.  The environment is conducive to learning.

Mr. Daniels

Math Teacher
My favorite duty for the last six years has been freshman study.  It gives me the opportunity to meet students that I wouldn’t normally meet, and I usually know their names for the next four years. I request it every year.

Ms. Buchman

Math Teacher
I think media center [is my favorite duty].  You can get the most work done, and it’s quiet.

Ms. Bishop

Math Teacher
Commons duty is the best because that’s when you get to know the kids.

Ms. Nowak

Spanish Teacher
I love restricted study duty.  It gives me an opportunity to grade.  It forces me to sit down and grade stuff.  It’s like my own restricted study.

Mr. Gavron

History / Business Teacher
I like lunch duty best.  I get to interact with students as well as faculty and staff.  It’s less restricted, not an academic focus. And I get to steal kids’ food.

Ms. Urban

History Teacher
I like restricted study.  I like any duty where I can conference and hang out with my students.

Ms. Shellito

English Teacher
I think I like the media center the best.  I always like the library and being surrounded by books.

Mr. Rideout

Science Teacher
As part of my job, duties aren’t so much on my mind.  I don’t so much feel the call of duty, as I’d rather play Call of Duty.

Ms. Skehan

Spanish Teacher
[My favorite duty is] the commons, because it is a time when you can help students.  I like a duty where you can still do classwork.

RisemanMs. Riseman

Science Teacher
I like freshman study because I like to get to know some of the freshman that I wouldn’t usually know.  I get to help them with stuff like Spanish, which I don’t usually get to do.
