Fox News' Two-Dimensional Coverage

The entire school was blazing with orange and black last Friday, eager for the Fox News coverage of our school. We were unusually spirited for this occasion; it’s rare for so much attention to be given to a school as small as ours. Preceding the football game on Friday, Fox had filmed our a cappella groups: the T-Tones, the Madrigals, and the Muses. The students in these groups were excited to show what they had been practicing, and they performed well.

Likewise, the football team made us proud with its 35-29 win against Lincoln-Sudbury. Mike Mitchell and Dylan Register, especially, proved their capabilities in the game.

Yet, as much as we take pride in our a cappella groups and our football team, the coverage seemed unbalanced. The two groups do not represent our school as a whole. What about SADD, or Students Against Destructive Decisions, which Wayland founded and which has now become a nationwide organization? What about our First Robotics Team? Our PB&J Club? Our Asian Culture Club? The golf team? Jazz Ensemble? Mock Trial? The Wayland High School History Project? Academic Decathlon? Winter Week? There is more to our school than football and singing. There are so many other teams, clubs, activities, and student organizations that Fox failed to touch upon. With such a dearth of coverage in these other areas, it’s clear that our school was not depicted properly. Their broadcast disregarded numerous dimensions of the community.

Of course, Fox News was not able to film every aspect of our school. They probably wanted to keep their coverage simple. Yet it is disappointing to find that a professional broadcasting station had such a narrow focus.

Even the way these groups were filmed showed a bias. While the Madrigals simply sang and the Muses only answered a few questions in addition to performing, the T-Tones presented their history and achievements in a far more superiorly shot and edited section of the news. During their exclusive coverage, Mrs. Carroll commented on the group, and members were interviewed rather extensively and professionally compared with the Muses’ interview. Fox covered the T-Tones in two locations on campus and interviewed four members of the group. Their coverage was filmed using both tripods and handheld cameras and added up to more than three minutes. In comparison, the Madrigals and Muses were informally shot with a handheld camera in one place for half a minute and two minutes respectively. Even the manner in which they introduced the three groups was imbalanced: “Watch a performance by The Muses,” “Watch a performance by The Madrigals,” “Wayland High’s all-male A cappella group, Testostertones.” There was an obvious preference towards the T-Tones.

Fox’s coverage is a reminder that we should strive for balanced broadcasting, whether we are on the reporting side or the subject side. If in the future we are offered the opportunity to appear on a news program, we should make sure that we are portrayed in the most accurate and comprehensive way possible.

“Yet, as much as we take pride in our a cappella groups and our football team, the coverage seemed unbalanced…it’s clear that our school was not depicted properly. Their broadcast disregarded numerous dimensions of the community”

How many students participate in SADD. While it is a very important organization nationwide and in Wayland it is not very prevalent to many students in our school.

I also agree with what Marie said “t would be impossible to show every aspect of our school, especially since many aspects of Wayland High School are a little boring.” and “We broadcast things that we know the majority of students at Wayland are interested in.” More students are interested in football games and a Capella than SADD, Intervention Team, and Wayland’s many other organizations.

Marie, I agree with you 110%. I have nothing against the fact that people focused more on the T Tones. I understand why you did it also. You knew that the T Tones were the best, and as a news media group you wanted to appeal to the most amount of people that you could. …maybe thats what Fox wanted to do also.
I agree with you Marie, but I am completely against this article. Fox couldn’t cover every aspect of our school, WSPN couldn’t either, so stop complaining.

The reason that we did not cover the other groups as much at the Pops concert is because we were afraid our battery was running out. It would be impossible to show every aspect of our school, especially since many aspects of Wayland High School are a little boring.
We always strive for balanced broadcasting here at WSPN, but we are only a small, student run organization with not incredibly high tech equipment. We broadcast things that we know the majority of students at Wayland are interested in.

WSPN is a hypocrite. They say that things shouldn’t be biased, like they think Fox was with the T Tones. However, from the Pops Concert, they only showed the T Tones and not the other a capella groups that performed. I enjoyed watching the T Tones, and I think they are the best, but you can’t complain about Fox when you did the same thing.

You can’t complain that they didn’t cover every aspect of the school to an equal degree. That would require an immense amount of broadcasting time as well as the vast amount of information the reporter would have had to gathered. It’s financially sound for Fox to focus on a few things that will interest people. Fox is a company, and as such it is interested in making money.

SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions, not drunk driving. Also, Fox came for a segment they do called “High School Friday.” In this segment, they show a high school football game. Thats why it focused on football mainly. Nobody else was really supposed to be in it, and I don’t know why they had the a capella groups.
I think Mr. Tutweiller wanted some music thing shown, and he asked the T Tones to do it. It wasn’t Fox’s fault, in fact, they wanted to get all the groups which is why they did the Muses and the Mads. The Muses and Mads were a last minute thing, which is why they didn’t have a long segment. And the T Tones only had one camera man also.
And in my opinion, the T Tones are the best. I wouldn’t blame Fox.
