Update from the Wayland High Ski Team

Despite difficult courses, icy trails and tough conditions, as well as the constant threat of the team being cut next year, the Wayland High School ski team is closing off the year with improved showings in both downhill and cross country over previous years.

Although the girls’ cross-country team, made up of mostly underclassmen, struggled to place, the downhill team ended up in 5th place with one race left in the season. It’s an improvement from recent years, and with no seniors racing, our performance can only get better.

On the boys’ side, Wayland races in a very tough ski league for both for downhill and cross-country. The final meet of the season saw them once again place fourth, behind CC, AB, and LS. For downhill, the guys took 5th place behind LS, CC, Algonquin, and Nashoba.

The girl’s cross-country team was faced with their most difficult race yet. It was a 7.4km race with many steep hills that saw even the best skiers in the league struggle. Christa Villari led the girls, finishing in 37th place, followed by co-captain Heather Gibson in 43rd, who finished just ahead of teammate Kelsey Jurist. Co-captain Matti Starr finished in 46th, while Rebecca Chinman took 51st, followed by Kara MacDonald in 52nd. At the pace the team is improving, they have much to look forward to in coming years.

Despite having no senior girls, the downhill team has improved from last year. For the first time in her high school career, co-captain Matti Starr has consistently finished in the top ten, qualifying her for a DCL all-star and allowing her to race at states, which is held at Wachusett after break. Matti is currently comfortably sitting in 3rd place in the league. Starr placed 4th in this past week’s GS race. Other promising underclassmen include freshman Christa Villari, who placed 8th, her best finish this year. Christa’s overall standings have placed her in 15th. Sophomore Kelsey Jurist also stepped up for a PB finish, taking 15th place this week. Sophomore Julia Braunstein finished in 28th place, followed by freshman Rebecca Chinman in 35th and Kara MacDonald in 42nd.

The guys’ cross-country team has also greatly improved from previous years, as racers from all grades have done very well. The guys raced the same course as the girls for Tuesday’s cross country race. It was a grueling course, with long uphills and strong racers from all schools competing in the last race of the regular season. Co-captain Dan Eisenson finished in 6th place, his third year as one of the league’s best racers. Co-Captain Mike Boykin finished in 10th place after a sprint finish with three other racers. Lucas Holmes finished in 25th, leading David Villari who finished 26th. The two paced each other and drafted during the race for a strong finish from both. Mike Miles stepped up big time this year as the team’s fifth varsity racer and took 31st. Both Eisenson and Boykin placed in the top ten this year, earning themselves DCL all-stars.

The downhill team has also seen much better results this year. With one race to go, both freshman David Villari, in 5th place, and sophomore Taylor Bridgman, in 9th, have a chance to go to states and call themselves DCL all-stars. This past race, Villari finished in 3rd, one of his best finishes this year, while Bridgman took 11th. Jerry Chase finished in 28th place, followed by Mark Schwartz in 32nd and co-captain Mike Boykin in 34th. Despite having a very good first run, Dan Eisenson fell on his second race and was disqualified. The season’s best is still to come with sprints, relays and states on the cross-country side, and the final race and states for the downhill racers.
