The following is a letter sent by Middle School Principal Charlie Schlegel to Superintendent Gary Burton:
Of all the memos, e-mails and newsletters that I have written over the last couple years, the most difficult may be this one, for I am writing today to formally resign as principal of Wayland Middle School, effective June 30, 2008.
As you may recall, I joined the faculty here four years ago with minimal knowledge of the school, its traditions and its unending efforts to serve every child. Since then, I have learned so much. I have had the chance to be part of a skilled administrative team that approaches each decision so thoughtfully. I have had an unparalleled opportunity to work with and, even more, learn from an exceptional group of educators, who care so deeply about children in their middle school years. And, I have gotten to know a wonderful group of students and families that truly make this school a fun, vibrant place to be.
It is difficult to comprehend leaving the Middle School; yet, it is even more challenging to express fully my appreciation for the opportunity I have had here and the unbridled hopes that I hold for this school’s continued success.
Thus, it is with a heavy heart that I am leaving my position in Wayland. My wife and I and our two young girls are moving to Indianapolis, where I am taking on the leadership of a new charter school. We are certainly excited about the prospect of being closer to family and eager to pursue our respective professional goals in this new city. However, it does not make it any easier to leave the many friends we have made in the Boston area and the warm and supportive relationships that I have developed here in Wayland.
Finally, resignation aside, it is not even April; there are many more days, decisions and dilemmas ahead this school year. While I share this letter with you today, please know that I will continue to dedicate all the energy, care and commitment I have to this school and the important work that we do here. It continues to be a great honor to serve as principal of Wayland Middle School, and I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to be part of this school’s wonderful story of success.
Thank you.
