Outdoors Club hikes to Mt. Monadnock, plans ambitious upcoming events

This year, Wayland High School has welcomed a variety of new and exciting clubs. Of these new groups, the Outdoors Club, run jointly by Mr. Page and Mrs. Lehmann, is a club in which students partake in fun and challenging outdoor athletic activities.

Last Saturday, the Outdoors Club enjoyed their first outdoor recreation: a hike to Mt. Monadnock. Though it was a bit chilly, the Outdoors Club was fortunate enough to get otherwise beautiful weather. The trip was a great success.

Students from all grades participated in this hike. According to Mrs. Lehmann, “[the hike] really brought people together,” as conversation flowed easily between the personable hikers.

Unfortunately, the PSAT testing date conflicted with this trip, leaving many who had anticipated the hike unable to attend.  The Outdoors Club is eager for an even larger turnout for the next planned activity, which is going to be a sleep-over ski trip.

The ski trip is scheduled to be held from January 23rd to 24th, and all students are welcome to sign up. The tentative cost for this trip, $140.00, is a small price to pay for the all-inclusive sleep-over. The fee covers transportation, food (including a large Italian style dinner), hotel suites, ski rentals, and the ski lift expense. Mr. Page, a business teacher at the high school, was able to convince the ski resort to offer our high school an exceptional discount on the trip, allowing it to be affordable as well as fun.

Before the end of the school year, Mr. Page and Mrs. Lehmann are hoping to squeeze in two additional outdoor activities. They have ideas of going white water rafting, tubing and/or snowshoeing anytime from February up until June.

In addition to the already successful start, the Outdoors Club is looking into the far future, planning an out of state or even out of country expedition for the next school year. Students interested in being part of this excitement should contact Mrs. Lehmann or Mr. Page for more information.

Sounds like a great trip. Monadnock is a bit of an easy mountain though… the most climbed mountain in the world actually. I’d come next time if it was something a bit more… non-commercial
