Science Olympiad hopes to perform better

Last Thursday, on November 13th, the Wayland Science Olympiad team participated in the second regional meet in Burlington High School with Cam Tenny and Costas Akrivoulis as team leaders. The results were not quite what the members were expecting—Wayland as a team won 13th place out of 17 participating schools.

“On the next meet, we’ll make sure the people that say they’re going to show up don’t default the day before,” said Akrivoulis, noting that unexpected absences of some members had affected the outcome.

There were four different events taking place at the meet: Electric Vehicle, Wind Power, Keep the Heat, and Health Science. Three or four members of the team prepared for each event over the last month.

For the Wayland team, the Electric Vehicle won 7th place, Wind Power 13th place, Keep the Heat 10th place, and Health Science 14th place. These results were contrasted with that of the first meet, which took place at Acton-Boxborough High School on October 16th. Then, Wayland as a team had won 5th place out of 16 participating schools.

On the first meet, the categories had been different. It consisted of Physics Lab, Egg-O-Naut, Astronomy, and Mystery Architecture.

The team’s current standing, an average of the performances of the first two meets, is 9th place, tied with Medfield High School, out of 18 schools. Wayland Science Olympiad team members hope to perform better at the third regional meet. The next meet will be held at Belmont High School on December 11th.

“For the upcoming meet, we will make sure that more preparation is in order,” said Akrivoulis.

    here’s a question:
why is this under the category of sports? i personally do not see this as a sport because it does not require too much physical effort
