Red Sox 2009 off-season preview

Last season, the AL East was a mad house: four highly competitive teams were vying for one or two playoff spots. In one of the tightest play-off races in the past five years, four teams, the Red Sox, Rays, Yankees, and Blue Jays, all finished with over 85 wins. Having learned their lesson from last season when they cut payroll and let key players leave, both the Red Sox and Yankees are looking to splash the cash this off-season. Since neither of these two premier teams finished in first place, there will be a mad dash for free agents in the AL East. Here is a preview of the Red Sox off-season plans.

Rotation:
The Sox have a large list of starting pitchers, probably their greatest surplus of talent. The top three are clearly set: Josh Beckett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and Jon Lester; however, spots four and five are up for grabs. The Sox have Tim Wakefield, Clay Buchholz, Justin Masterson, and even Michael Bowden as possible starters, making at least one, if not two, of them expandable. Wakefield is most likely to take one of the spots, with Buchholz or Masterson taking the final one. There is a chance though that the Sox sign a starting pitcher to counter-act the Yankees pursuit of aces CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett, and Ben Sheets. The most likely candidate is Derek Lowe, who has said he would love to come back, and that he might even take a small pay cut to do it. The Sox should also be in on AJ Burnett, but probably to raise the price for the Yankees and Blue Jays. To add to the Sox surplus, recently signed 22-year old Junichi Tawaza, who will start in the minors, but who has a chance to make the major league roster later in the season. There are also rumors that the Sox have their eye on Japanese Vet Kenshin Kawakami, who is said to have mutual interest with the Sox.

Predictions:
Sox end up raising the prices for the Yankees on AJ Burnett, Ben Sheets and Derek Lowe, but do not sign any of the three. Instead the Sox sign Kenshin Kawakami, who would be the fourth Japanese player on the Sox, to a two year contract for a little under $10 million.

2009 Rotation:
1. Josh Beckett
2. Daisuke Matsuzaka
3. Jon Lester
4. Kenshin Kawakami
5. Tim Wakefield
Spot Starter: Clay Buchholz/Junichi Tawaza

Bullpen:
The Sox have clearly made good strides this off-season in addressing a weakness. The Sox already have a solid bullpen with Jon Papelbon, Manny Delcarmen, and Hideki Okajima, but the Sox added another big piece, acquiring Ramon Ramirez from the Royals for Coco Crisp in late November. The Sox also acquired Wes Littleton, who is coming off surgery, but who was a solid relief pitcher two years ago.

Predictions:
I don’t see the Sox making another bullpen move this off-season, unless it is for a minor leaguer.

2009 Bullpen:
Closer: Jon Papelbon
Setup: Hideki Okajima
Middle: Manny Delcarmen
Middle: Ramon Ramirez
Middle: Javy Lopez
Long: David Aardsma

Infield:
The Sox lost a huge bat with Manny Ramirez departing at last season’s trade deadline, and they need to regain the lost power. The premier hitting free agent on the market, first baseman Mark Teixera, is very high on Sox’s list, and could be offered the biggest contract ever in Red Sox history. The problem is, the Sox are set on the corners with third baseman Mike Lowell and first baseman/third baseman Kevin Youkilis, meaning one of them has to go or be a bench player. Lowell is the obvious choice here, but coming off his hip surgery, his value has plummeted and the return value would not be too high, especially if the Sox do not take on some of his salary. The market for Lowell will not be huge, but there will be one. The Sox will also probably sign a utility infielder to replace Alex Cora. Former Mariner infielder Willie Bloomquist is on the Sox’s radar, and may be offered a one year deal if the Sox decide to keep Lugo on the bench and start Jed Lowrie at short, although there have been rumors that the Sox have slight interest in Rafael Furcal. Clearly, second base will be occupied by last season’s AL MVP, Dustin Pedroia.

Predictions:
Sox splash the cash and sign Mark Teixera to the largest deal in Red Sox history with an eight year, 145 million dollar deal. Sox trade Mike Lowell to the Minnesota Twins for a low-level minor leaguer with decent potential. Sox also sign infielder Willie Bloomquist to be the final man off the bench.

2009 Infield:
1B: Mark Teixera
2B: Dustin Pedroia
SS: Jed Lowrie
3B: Kevin Youkilis
Bench: Julio Lugo
Bench: Willie Bloomquist

Outfield:
The Sox have a loaded outfield with Jason Bay, Jacoby Ellsbury, and J.D. Drew. The Sox do need a backup outfielder or two to fill the holes left by the departures of Coco Crisp and Mark Kotsay, although Kotsay could be re-signed. There has been interest shown in former Red Sox players Jay Payton and Gabe Kapler, and interest in hometown boy, and former Tampa Bay Ray, Rocco Baldelli.

Predictions:
Sox sign two backup, Rocco Baldelli and Gabe Kapler, making their roster complete. Along with being able to play Kapler at first, the Sox get some nice hitters who can come off the bench and make a difference in the game.

Catching:
The Sox have one catcher on their roster right now, Kevin Cash, who clearly will not be the starter in 2009. The Sox offered arbitration to Jason Varitek, hoping to get him back for at least one more year, but Varitek rejected the offer and is testing the free market but this doesn’t mean the Sox will not make a move for Jarrod Saltalamacchia or Taylor Teagarden. The Sox will most likely offer up Justin Masterson or Michael Bowden and a prospect for either.

Predictions:
Varitek signs a one year deal, getting 10 to 11 million, and trade Justin Masterson and a minor league player for Jarrod Saltalamacchia

2009 Catching:
C: Jason Varitek
Bench: Jarrod Saltalamacchia

You guys still seem to think that Manny has a large market. The Yankees and Dodgers are the only legitimate suitors for him, and neither team is going to get into a bidding war for him. The Dodgers put a 2-year 45 million dollar offer out and got no response, the Yanks will not go much higher. Manny is a 1 dimensional player, and the market for him is MUCH smaller than for guys like Teixiera. Don’t listen to MLB.com, they take information from other sources. If you want to find information about baseball, i suggest mlbrtraderumors.com It is a much better site and gives actual sources. mlb.com is useless for rumors and such.

The Same : “the Red Sox the only logical landing spot, over LA, BAL, and WAS.”

I consider the Angels (LA) as competition, but I think that Tex clearly wants to be on a east coast team because he and his wife are both from that area

Red Sox Rock: Manny has about a 2% chance of going to the Mets. His main options are the Dodgers, with a chance that the Yanks jump in if the Sox sign Tex, or the LA Angels if they miss out on Tex also. I don’t know where you got the Mets thing, but I consider them done this off-season besides maybe adding an Alex Cora type player. The Mets have spent enough money on their bullpen, and don’t have a ton more money to spend.

I’m sorry, but I don’t know where you get your sources from. The market for Manny is clearly not as strong as you think, and teams can sit back, relax, and make Boras drop his asking price into their zone, not the other way around. LAD made a 2-year 45 million offer already, and my guess is they eventually guarentee a 3rd year and sign Manny back around 3-years 65-75 million range. The Yanks don’t have all the money in the world, and with Pettite about to re-sign for them after spending a whopping 246 million on CC and Burnett, I don’t think they will get Pettite, CC, Burnett, and Manny….but if they did that would be scary

well mannys main options right now are the new york yankees or the mets.

the yanks need a power hitter and they have the right pitching staff so with manny they will be all set.

theres still a chance he will go to the mets but its more likley he will go 2 the yanks.

for cash the only reason why i dont think were dont deff getting him back is bcuz the sox could use a stronger cathcher that can take some pressure off of varitck if he returns.

also, the yanks are realistically the only team that has enough money for manny

    i totally dissagree with you…srry

Tex will most likely take a discount because of the fact that A) he wants to play on the east coast, and B) he wants to play for a contender, making the Red Sox the only logical landing spot, over LA, BAL, and WAS.

Cash was non-tendered and my guess is, he will not be re-signed unless an injury occurs. Because of the non-tender move, you will see the Sox try and pickup 2 catchers this offseason.

Also Red Sox rock, I don’t know where you get your info, but Lowe’s preference of Boston has been vastly overrated, and I can not see the Sox beating a 3 or 4 year offer around 17 million a year for a potential 4 starter. That just does not make sense.

Also I dont see Manny on the Yankees because they are trying to an extent to limit their payroll and are probably just increasing prices for other teams, a strategy that is commonly used by Brian Cashman

there is no way teixera will sign for 15mill less than he has been offered from washington. if they want him they need at least 160

I don’t think that the Sox should trade Masterson. He is too valuable in the bullpen at this time. I think that they are more likely to trade Bowden who did well in his first start and brought attention to himself. And if they bring in a catcher aren’t they more likely to keep Cash for Wake. Also do you really think that the Twins want Lowell? They are a low-market team and Theo isn’t going to want to pay all of the contract after he pays Texeria for 20+ million.

I dont think that the sox will do the Masterson deal though.

And why wouldnt Lowell be playing third and youk first?

Also, the sox have a good chance at signing lowe cuz boston was on the top of his list. as a free agent he gets to choose where he wants to go. and i personally doubt thats new york since he really wanted 2 come 2 boston

the sox definatly need another starter, and lowe would be perfect

bailey came up multiple times last year and played very well. my guess is that the sox will bring him up and use him when they are down an infielder.

i dont think that the red sox are a team to wait. we already waited 86 years. nowz not the time to wiat to get a next big starter

i also think that tarawza can turn into something big with some work. in the future bucholz, masterson, and tarawza are going to play major roles on the team

The Sox have tons of pitching depth with Masterson, Buchholz, and Michael Bowden. Trading Masterson and more for a young catcher would be great for the Sox because they need a replacement for Varitek. The Sox in my guess will not sign Lowe because of the Yankees offer around 4 years between 68-72 million. I dont think the Sox want to spend that type of money on another starter, and will most likely wait until next year to get the next big starter (Yu Darvish). I also don’t think Bailey will be a big factor at all, Bailey is a career AAA player and if lucky will get a September callup, but already being 30 years old, you won’t see him being used very much

    good article!
I think that the red sox are not going to trade Justin Masterson for Jarrod Saltalamacchia because they need more strong pitchers, and Masterson has the ability to turn into a great pitcher with a little bit of work.
Who knows if Variteck is coming back or not, but he is essential to our team, i bet that he will get a two year contract.
As for the pitching rotation, it will consist of dice k, lester, wakefield, beckett, and possibly clay bucholz.
I agree with the in-field predictions except that I think youk will be playing first with lowell on third most of the time, with that line-up rotating. I also think that Bailey is going to be brought up a lot to play for the sox.
outfield should consist of bay, ellsbury, and drew.

i bet the sox are going to sign derek lowe as well
