With a record of 6-7-2, and just one game remaining in the regular season, the Wayland field hockey team is only a win away from qualifying for the state tournament. After a rocky start to the season, fought hard to win and tie against teams who had previously defeated them.
Two weeks ago, Wayland tied against Lincoln-Sudbury for what may be the first time in history. In addition, Wayland earned a crucial victory last Thursday against Arlington High School. After half time, with a score of 0-0, Wayland took the field with determination and intensity. Christa Villari pocketed two beautiful goals early on in the half, and Arlington was unable to catch up, scoring only once before the game ended.
This past Monday, with their spot in tournament still at stake, Wayland struggled against Tyngsborough, but managed to get a tie. Tyngsborough scored in the first half, and Wayland failed to respond, and at the half it was 1-0. With only 10 minutes left to spare, midfielder Katie Miller brought the ball into the circle, setting up for a goal scored by Sama Abdul-Aziz. Neither Wayland nor Tyngsborough was able to score again; the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
This Thursday, Wayland will wrap up the regular season with a home game against Concord-Carlisle. Much is at stake, for a win will officially qualify the team for a spot in tournament, while a tie or loss would mean an end to the season.
