WHS groups to perform at College A Cappella Night

This spring’s College A Cappella Night is March 26th, at 7:30, a semi-annual event organized by the Creative Arts Parent Association, CAPA. All proceeds of the event support performing and visual arts at Wayland High School. Performing at that event will be Wayland High School’s very own Madrigals, Testostertones and Muses, as well as the Oregon’s On the Rocks, the UMass Amherst Dynamics and the Mount Holyoke Diversions.

University of Oregon’s On the Rocks

For the first time ever, the popular On the Rocks (OTR) is coming to Wayland. On the Rocks is an all-male a cappella group from the University of Oregon. The group was not originally scheduled to perform; the Tufts Beelzebubs were slated to be the all-male group at the concert, but too many of their members had scheduling conflicts.

Instead of simply backing out, however, the Bubs’ business manager, Eric Morrissey, contacted a friend in OTR. It turns out OTR had been planning a tour of the Northeast that weekend, and arrangements were made for them to visit Wayland.

Public Relations Manager for OTR, Teigh Bowen,  explained OTR’s rise to fame. “We quickly launched ourselves into the national spotlight by entertaining crowds all over the U.S. with our wide range of song choice and goofy stage antics,” he said. “We are happy to be celebrating our 10 year anniversary by taking an East Coast tour and spreading our love for music with anyone who enjoys watching us. Watch out though! Don’t sit too close, or we may rock your socks off!”

OTR has appeared on the NBC Today show, as well as on several a cappella compilation CDs. Their renditions of songs have appeared on various CDs, including “Yellow” on Best of College A Cappella 2004 and “Never Gonna Give You Up” on Best of College A Cappella 2009 and Voices Only 2008.

UMass Amherst Dynamics

The Dynamics are a premier co-ed a cappella group from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, consisting of 17 singers. Although the Dynamics have only been around for five years, they have quickly become a household name in the a cappella world.

They have released two CDs in the last three years, “Crescendo,” and “Love Games.” Additionally, the group recently spent winter break in New York recording a new album and laying down eleven brand new tracks. This new album, dubbed “Barking Mad,” will be available for pre-order at the concert; their other CDs will be on hand for purchase as well.

Mount Holyoke College Diversions

Wayland High School alumna Jen Walsh will be performing with the Mount Holyoke Diversions, an all-female a cappella group. A sophomore at Mount Holyoke, Walsh has proven to be a valuable member of the Diversions. She can sing any part and has already arranged songs for the group’s repertoire.

The Diversions, one of Mount Holyoke College’s five a cappella groups, was founded in 2003 and regularly performs both on and off campus. Their repertoire includes a mix of contemporary and pop songs arranged by group members. Their first CD was released in the spring of 2008, and they are in the process of recording their second CD this spring.

Tickets for College A Cappella Night are on sale now for $15 at Russell’s Garden Center and the WHS Main Office. For more information about On The Rocks or the Diversions, check out their websites here and here.

T-Tones and Oregon were totally the best. Everybody did fairly well, but I felt that the T-Tones and Oregon really went above and beyond.
