The Wayland High School Boys Varsity Soccer team started the season off with a bang defeating Dual County League (DCL) foe Newton South 3-2. The Warriors went on a scoring spree early in the game, earning all three of their goals in the first ten minutes of play.

Senior captain Griffin McGrail scored the first goal of the game on a breakaway. Returning starter and junior Mark Blahnik then scored a header for the second goal off of a cross by McGrail. Chris D’Amico, a junior and returning starter scored the third goal off of another breakaway.

Senior captains David Villari and Ian Stack led the defense, joined in the back by junior Doug Lyons and senior David von Mering. Other starters included juniors Matthew Gutschenritter and Nico Pascual-Leone, as well as seniors Dan Lesser and goalie Jack McCullough.

The Warriors tied Newton South in last year’s season opener, 1-1.

The Warriors continue their quest for a state championship on Wednesday at Boston Latin. Next week, they will face rival and reigning state champion Weston.

Later in the season, they will face DCL powerhouses Acton-Boxborough, Lincoln-Sudbury and Concord-Carlisle. The team also has two strong non-league opponents in Hopkinton and Masconomet.

The Warriors next home match will take place at 4pm on Tuesday October 5, against another reigning state champion and DCL heavyweight, Concord-Carlisle.
