Senior party canceled, administration assures no involvement

BREAKING NEWS (3/10/11 – 3:15pm):

Today, Thursday March 10, Wayland seniors received the news that the Senior Show After-Party that was scheduled at the residence of a Wayland senior was canceled as a result of police action. The family had been in on-going communication with the Wayland Police Department throughout the week.

During school students received the news that the family elected to cancel the party. The Wayland Police planned to place the residence on “high alert.” This means that the Wayland Police were going to closely monitor the surrounding area for trouble during the after-show party, according to Dean of Students Scott Parseghian. It is unknown why the party was canceled.

According to Principal Patrick Tutwiler, The Wayland High School Administration has had no contact with the family concerning this issue. The Administration learned of the cancellation from students. Earlier last week, Mr. Tutwiler sent an e-mail asking parents to abstain from hosting a post Senior Show party; however, the Administration states it has taken no further action.

Nevertheless, students were angry when they found out about the party’s cancellation, and rumors spread that the WHS Administration had been involved with the cancellation. This anger resulted in two protests during the day.

In an immediate reaction to the cancellation, an estimated 25 students gathered in the area around the main office, where Mr. Tutwiler explained to students that he had also just found out about the party’s cancellation, and that the WHS Administration had no part in it.

Immediately following the final school bell, an estimated 50 students gathered in the area outside the office and the Commons building. Students loudly expressed their frustration and anger about the situation, and others conferred with administrators to get the facts, discuss the party, and the safety of students tonight.
