Scrambled: Banana splits and chocolate milk

(Credit: Evan Barber/WSPN)

This past weekend, I saw Lion King 3D. While staring at my cursor, trying to think of something related to cooking to write about, the only thing I could think of was Simba and The Circle of Life.

You must be thinking, “There can’t possibly be anything that you can bake related to The Lion King, right?”

The only foods in the movie are an assortment of colorful bugs and a zebra leg. Of course, I would never suggest eating either of the above. However, watching the movie brought me back about ten years to when my twin sister, neighbor and I would get together almost every day to watch it.

Because I was also subconsciously thinking about what to write in this week’s post, I thought about what my favorite foods were back then. What came to mind was chocolate milk and banana splits.

We never drank store bought chocolate milk; we had the freedom to load the milk with as much chocolate sauce as we wanted (always an excessive amount). Watching the thick stream of chocolate disappear into the milk, stirring and seeing the white milk slowly turn more and more chocolaty was my favorite part.

This is a no-recipe-required concoction, so you have the freedom to get as creative as you want. To help you start, I’ll spill my secret banana split recipe to show you what I used to put in mine.

1. Start out with a medium sized bowl. Scoop as much vanilla ice cream as you want, depending on how hungry you are.
2. Slice a banana down the middle and line the outside of the ice cream.
3. Add one to two spoonfuls of fluff.
4. Pour on as much chocolate sauce as you’d like.
5. Top off your creation with whipped cream and rainbow sprinkles.
You can also try adding peanut butter or strawberries. Almost everything tastes good with vanilla ice cream, so go crazy!
