Scrambled: Halloween spider cookies

(Credit: Ellen Barber/WSPN)

The last couple weeks have been so hectic, between field hockey games and end of term assignments, that our family has neglected to buy a pumpkin, the essential Halloween decoration.

October 31st popped up out of nowhere, but after a weekend marathon of scary movies, I was finally ready for Halloween.

When we were younger, the whole block used to come to our house for a neighborhood Halloween party while all of us kids paraded down our block knocking on doors and begging for candy.

For this party, my mom would always make her famous spider cookies. Once we were old enough, we started to help her mix everything together and construct them. Although we no longer have our block party and have grown out of trick-or-treating, the recipe has stuck and it’s now a tradition to make these cookies every year.

In total, it takes only 15-20 minutes to make the cookies and they’re so simple you don’t even need to bake them.

Ingredients:
1 (12 oz) package of chocolate chips
1 Medium can of Chow Mein noodles
1 package of M&Ms Milk chocolate candy.

Instructions:
1. Melt chocolate chips in a saucepan over medium heat
2. Stir in noodles. Drop spoonfuls onto waxed paper
3. Add 2 M&Ms for “spider eyes”

Tips:
– Over time, we’ve found it more efficient to melt the chocolate chips in the microwave.
– Use milk chocolate instead of dark.
– Stick the M&Ms on quickly after you put the cookie on the wax paper. If you wait too long the chocolate will start to harden and they won’t stick as well.

Enjoy and Happy Halloween!
