At the beginning of each year, the freshmen have a class meeting. Students sit patiently in the auditorium as their classmates read speeches in an attempt to win their votes for positions in class office. Student government is a new concept for the freshmen.

This year, the class of 2015 elected Cameron Dixson as their president.

“I thought [being president] would be a great way to get to know my class better,” said Dixson.

The freshman class government also includes vice president Nick Barber, treasurer Jonah Camiel and secretary Elizabeth Jenny.

Although they are new to student government, the class of 2015 is already anticipating their fundraising opportunities. They have already begun planning for the magazine drive. Despite the drive’s lack of success in the past, the class of 2015 is optimistic. According to Dixson, the success of the grade does not simply depend on its government.

“I believe we have to work as a class to be able to do things,” said Dixson.

Even freshmen not involved in student government believe that it is essential to provide an exceptional four years in high school.

“If we didn’t have [student government] then we would not do things as a grade, like class trips,” said freshman Becca Wuerfl.

“It will help our grade get closer and be more organized,” added freshman Chloe Brown.

For now, the class of 2015 will rely on its recently elected class officers to excel in fundraising and plan successful events for the year.
