Girls field hockey wins first tournament game

This past Thursday, the WHS girls field hockey team won their first tournament game.

On Thursday November 1, the WHS girls field hockey team took on Newburyport in the North Division II first round game. Fourth seeded Newburyport struck first, but Wayland’s Nina Price countered, tying the game 1-1.

Later, Newburyport went up 2-1. But with less than 3 minutes remaining, senior Alice D’Orlando scored with an assist from senior Catherine Barber.

With the game tied 2-2, the thirteenth seeded warriors faced off in a 7v7 sudden death overtime, as opposed to the regular 11v11.

D’Orlando scored her second goal of the game assisted by senior Kela Butts to give the Warriors the win.

“We all really felt the energy going into the game. we were all so pumped up and worked really hard to have each other’s backs and come out with a win,” Price said.

The Warriors are set to face fifth seeded Winchester High School in the MIAA Division II North Quarter Finals at Winchester High School.
