Winter sports preview

Pictured above is last year's boys' basketball team. In the winter sports preview, WSPN reporters Max and Brendan discuss this year's winter sports teams' hopes and expectations for the coming season.

Nordic Skiing
The nordic skiing team, with the help of new captains seniors Meg Kuhn, Elizabeth Karpacz, Jacob Rudelson, and junior Paul Longnecker, is looking to improve this year after placing sixth in states last year. The new underclassmen on the team also hope to contribute to a positive season.
Skiers to watch: Girls: Audrey Zizza (junior) and Elizabeth Karpacz (senior)
Boys: Paul Longnecker (junior) and Eli Bucher (junior)

Alpine Skiing
After a solid season last year, the team is looking to be even better this year, hoping to place first in the DCL. The team also hopes to place first in states with the new leadership of seniors Tyler Peyton, Tyler Clark, Nichole Orlov and Sarah Mitty.
Skiers to watch: Girls: Nichole Orlov (senior) and Sarah Mitty (senior)
Boys:Andy Regan (sophomore), Will Regan (junior) and Ben Slater (sophomore)

Wrestling
With new captains junior Cole Elias and seniors Ryan Bache and Chris Oyola, the boys are looking to uphold their standards of last year’s 24-3 record. Under the supervision of Coach Sean Chase, this year, the boys look to create an even stronger team with the addition of new underclassmen.
Players to watch: Cole Elias (junior), Michael Connell (sophomore) and Ryan Bache (senior)

Boys’ Hockey
After their early loss to Rockport High School in the first round of their tournament last year, the boys’ hockey team hopes to make it far under the leadership of second-year captain Marcus Daisy and new captains junior Peter Ordendella and senior Roby Williams. The boys will look to utilize their skills and strengths in hopes of winning a state title.
Players to watch: Marcus Daisy (senior), Nick Morgan (junior) and Peter Orlandella (junior)

Girls’ Hockey
The girls look to continue their success from last year as DCL champions. Head coach Bill McDonald hopes to create a team with even stronger chemistry.
Player to watch: Gianna Fargnoli (junior)

Girls’ Indoor Track
Last season, the girls made states in the 4×400 relay and the 4×200 relay, and they plan on continuing their success in this coming season. With the talents of junior Isabelle Lyons and sophomore Erica Sheffres, the team hopes to have many runners make the DCL and states.
Runners to watch: Margot Turner (junior) and Erica Sheffres (sophomore)

Boys’ Indoor Track
This season, the team hopes to fill every event using the many new runners joining the team this year. Expectations are high for senior captains, like Bennett Keyes, who placed ninth overall in the 600 meter run last year as a junior.
Runners to watch: Nick Galang (junior) and Bennett Keyes (senior)

Girls’ Basketball
After a solid start to last year’s season, the girls’ basketball team finished 4-12, a definite improvement from the 2011-2012 season. This year, the girls hope to improve their record and win their big game against Weston.
Players to watch: Daly Place (junior) and Bronwyn Davies (sophomore)

Boys’ Basketball
Last season, the team won the DCL and finished with a record of 14-3. The team hopes to continue its success into this season and win the DCL championship and division playoffs.
Players to watch: Andy Carmichael (junior), Lucas Boegehold (senior) and Robert Williams (senior).

Boys’ Swimming
This year, the boys hope to improve their 10-3 record from last season. Last year, sectionals were cancelled, but the team placed second overall at states.
Swimmers to watch: James Jurist (senior) and Drew Donovan (junior)
Diver to watch: Alex Chused (junior)

Girls’ Swimming
Last season, the girls had an undefeated season. The team aims to match that record this year and compete at sectionals, which were cancelled last year due to weather. The girls’ team won states for the second year in a row last year, their seventh state title in eight years.
Swimmer to watch: Molly Pierce (junior)
Diver to watch: Maddi Sacra (senior)
