The Ally Way: How to fulfill New Year’s resolutions (and other goals)

width="470"
In this post, blogger Ally Toto instructs readers on how to meet goals during the New Year.
It’s that time of year again. You’re calculating a to-do list in your head of goals that you wish you had accomplished last year. In fact, some of these have been on your list for multiple years but have yet to be achieved! “This year is going to be different,” you tell yourself. “I’m going to follow through with my goals this time.” In this blog, you will learn effective techniques to help you fulfill each and every one of your New Year’s goals and resolutions.

1. Make a plan
Having a schedule written down on paper, a calendar or your phone will help set a time structure to your goal to make it more reachable. You can also set a reminder on your phone to complete your goal. Setting an end date on your calendar also makes a goal more concrete.

2. Encourage yourself
Write little notes of encouragement and leave them around the house. Think about how good you will feel when you achieve your goal, and use visualization to picture yourself working towards and achieving your goal.

3. Reward yourself
No matter what the goal is, you should reward yourself for exemplary effort toward reaching the goal after a given amount of time or a given amount of success. For example, if your goal is to stop eating dessert every night, reward yourself after one week with a night where you do eat dessert.

4. Ease into it
Don’t try to make too extreme of a transition in your life at once. Ween yourself off of a bad habit or whatever action you want to change, and keep raising the bar until you have reached your target. By breaking down a goal into smaller more reachable parts, you will have a much greater success rate.

5. Tell your friends
If people know that you have a goal, they can motivate you and offer you positive reinforcement when you follow through. Hey, you might even inspire them to make a change in their own lives!

6.Research
By reading about your goal, you can increase your level of motivation and find more reasons why reaching your goal is important. Specifically, reading success stories from other people can provide enormous inspiration.

7. Focus
Don’t try and take on too many goals at once. Start with one, achieve it, and then move on to your next goal. This will prevent you from getting too overwhelmed and will enable you to put all your energy and efforts into one outlet.

8. Be committed!
In the end, it all comes down to how committed you are towards reaching your goal. Don’t give up if you fall behind or don’t fully reach a goal — let that inspire you to push yourself even more.
