With four wins and three losses, Wayland baseball is looking to have another successful season. Wayland is a solid team and a contender for the DCL Small title, since all three losses occurred against DCL Large teams.

Wayland started off the season against Hopedale with senior captain Ian Bonner on the mound. Bonner threw a complete game, allowing only four runs in eight innings and earning his first win of the season. The Wayland bats started off slow, with the exception of junior Matt King, who had a homerun and five RBI’s.

Wayland then traveled to Newton South where they faced an excellent hitting team. The final score was 13-1, with Newton South winning.  Over vacation, Wayland played three games. The team lost its first to Boston Latin, and then defeated Bedford with an excellent performance by Matt Crismond on the mound, who threw a complete game.

Wayland went on to defeat Canton and Weston. The former game gave junior pitcher Ben Shelton his first start, and the latter marked a dominant performance by Bonner, who allowed only two hits, no runs, and eleven strikeouts. Most recently, Wayland lost to Acton-Boxborough, 11-0.

This year’s varsity team is a veteran team consisting almost entirely of juniors and seniors, with freshmen occasionally playing as well. Wayland is lead by seniors Ian Bonner, Mike Trueblood, Ryan Pesaturo, Matt Crismond, Sam Karp and Ryan “Tuna” Thomas.  The juniors on the team include Jason Simches, Ian Stack, Tim Hanifin, EJ Nicholas, Matt King, Matt Roberts, Jay Saltmarsh and Ben Shelton, with freshman Rory McHargh sprinkled in.

Wayland looks to continue their early success in the remainder of the season. “We have a good shot to do some damage in this league,” said Bonner. “We have a good group of guys, a core of returning players who continue to improve, and we will be hard to beat through the rest of the season.”
