In a game that came down to the last 20 seconds of game play, Wayland inched out in front of Concord, scoring the first and only goal of the game in the final moments of the second half.

Wayland has secured the title of DCL champions, however, if Weston won their game tonight, they will share the title of DCL champions. If Weston lost their game tonight, Wayland will be the exclusive champions.

UPDATE: Weston won their game. Wayland and Weston tied as the DCL champions.

“It’s unbelievable. This is the first time I think in history that Wayland has taken the DCL champs,” said Coach Shelly Fraser. Fraser has coached varsity field hockey for the past 8 years at Wayland.

Throughout the game, Wayland and Concord each vied for control of the ball, but to no avail. The first half passed without a goal. In the second half, tension and suspense rose in the Wayland stands and in the players on the sidelines.

“The girls just kept in there and played until the very end,” said Fraser.

With 21 seconds left on the clock, Senior Lina Cowen took a penalty for Wayland. Taylor Cohen scored the game-winning goal with 16 seconds left in her high school field hockey career.

“The girls wanted it,” said Fraser. “They played their hearts out, and were just phenomenal.”
