Last Friday, March 20th, Wayland High School’s three choral groups embarked on a trip to New York City, lead by choral director Rachel Carroll. Unlike regular field trips, the first ever chorus trip to New York was based on performing arts.
“It was great to have an arts-related field trip for a change,” said sophomore Larry Guo.
The bus left St. Ann’s Church in Wayland at 8:30 am on Friday, and as soon as the group of eighty students arrived in New York City, they had a performance scheduled at the Trinity Church.
“I am so proud of our students who hopped off a bus, did a ten minute warm-up and performed beautifully in a new space. They’re pros,” said Carroll.
After the performance, the group walked down the road to view the September 11th museum, as well as Ground Zero, the former site of the World Trade Center. The World Trade Center is currently being built to function both as a trading center and as a memorial to those who lost their lives.
After viewing, the site the troupe went to see a Broadway show “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying”, starring “Harry Potter’s” Daniel Radcliffe.
The rest of the weekend was full of sightseeing, including trips to Battery Park, the Statue of Liberty, and The Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center.
Another highlight of the trip was a tour of the historic Apollo theater. The Apollo theater is the host to the world-renowned show Amateur Night that has staged musical greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown and Michael Jackson.
Honors Concert Choir, the Testostertones, the Madrigals, the Muses, senior Marina Shelton, freshman Leesha Sargeant-Warren and sophomore Caitlin O’Keefe were even able to perform on the historic stage.
“It was such a great experience. I hope that underclassmen get to continue to go on this trip in the future,” said junior Abby Kretowicz.
“We had an absolute blast,” added Carroll. “I’m so grateful for the families who donated for scholarships, to CAPA for all the help they gave me, and to each of the amazing chaperones, who took their weekend to come with us.”
