The Warriors found success for the second week in a row, winning the Division III Central sectional title as well as last week’s DCL tournament. The Warriors placed eleven wrestlers in the top 4, qualifying them for next week’s individual state tournament at Wakefield. Of those eleven, four were crowned sectional champions.
Max Garelick claimed his first sectional title as a sophomore at 119 lbs., with an exciting overtime victory against his Weston opponent. Max’s brother Ben failed to defend his title at 125 lbs., falling to Derek Jordan of Hudson. Wayland’s third straight finalist Mike Testa claimed his second sectional title with a dominant victory over his Watertown opponent. Max Lewin and Matt Lombardo each claimed their third straight sectional title at 145 and 152 lbs., respectively.
Finalists aside, Wayland had third place showings by Greg Eng at 112 lbs., Bryant Wolf at 135 lbs., Zach Sperling at 160 lbs., and Ben Price at 215 lbs. Ross Cunningham (171 lbs.) and Abe Freedburg (Hvy.) also qualified for the state tournament. Ty Herstine finished in fifth place.
The top four teams of the tournament, Josiah Quincy (second), Hudson (third), and Weston (fourth), will be battling it out at Wayland on Wednesday night for the dual meet sectional title. This week promises to be a tough one for the Warriors as they prepare for the duals, as well as the DIII state tourney on Friday and Saturday.
In addition to being sectional tournament champions, the Warriors also claimed the DCL tournament title last weekend at Newton South High School. Wayland had six finalists, five of whom were crowned champions. Ben Garelick (125 lbs.), Mike Testa (130 lbs.), Max Lewin (145 lbs.), Matt Lombardo (152 lbs.), and Ben Price (215 lbs.) each took home the gold. Greg Eng had a strong second place finish at 103 lbs. Other place winners included Max Garelick (119 lbs.), Bryant Wolf (135 lbs.), Ross Cunningham (171 lbs.), Tyler Sheffels (189 lbs.), and Abe Freedburg (Hvy.) Max Lewin notched his 100th career victory with a pin in the finals, and Mike Testa was given the “most falls least time” award for his four pins through the finals. The tournament saw an overall strong showing by the Warriors, which will boost their confidence for the upcoming post-season tournaments.
