It was quite an exciting weekend for the boys’ soccer team! The boys set out on Saturday morning for Worcester Polytechnic Institute with the hopes of the Division 3 state title. Five hours later, the boys returned with the victory trophy.
However, the time in between had its ups and downs. The boys went into the game knowing that their senior captain Andres Pascual-Leone was not allowed to suit up because of a yellow card suspension, and the adversity didn’t end there.
During warm-ups, starting goalie Robert Yuan hurt his hip and was unable to play. Senior Max Marks stepped up and had a phenomenal game.
The boys went back and forth with Belchertown all game. We got some shots on net, and they got some shots on net. We were incredibly lucky when a couple of Belchertown’s shots hit the posts rather than going in. A couple inches here or there and Belchetown would have had the title.
After 80 long minutes of fighting, the game went into sudden death overtime. Belchertown took the kick off, but then we got the ball back and took it straight up the field. Senior Scott Carvahlo got a shot off, but it was blocked. With the help of his team, he was able to get the rebound and score for the title. It was great, and everyone was happy and excited! Go boys’ soccer!
On a different note, the Wayland senior girls took on the Weston senior girls in the annual Powderpuff game on Wednesday. After weeks of practice the girls showed up at the field house at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, and spirits were high. War paint was applied, plays were run through, and we took the field. We were all excited, but to be honest, I was pretty nervous. We won the coin toss and chose to start with the ball.
With good blocking by our O-line and receivers, we were able to rush the ball 80 yards on the first possession, just short of the first down. Then, we turned the ball over on downs. Fortunately, we had a phenomenal defense led by Anna Downs on the D-line, and the Wildcats went four and out.
In the next possession, Anna Lesser made a phenomenal run and scored a touchdown, the only touchdown of the game. The ball was turned over, and it was our defense’s turn to shine. The defense brought the game into halftime, then ran 17 minutes off the clock in the second half. We ended up winning 7-0 with some great effort by all.
Personally, I would say we were the classier team on the field. We wore shirts that were appropriate and approved by administration, while Weston’s shirts were not approved and contained derogatory language. Also, we stayed classy after the game; we didn’t start any fights, and we shook their hands.
Winter sports start next week! Good luck everyone.
