Members of the Wayland community, including students, parents and teachers, gather to peacefully protest the racist incidents that occurred at Wayland Middle School. “The purpose [of the rallies] wasn’t to vilify the actions of the wrongdoers, but instead, this was about supporting children, families and educators of color who were really hurt and felt unsafe,” WMS parent and rally organizer Meg Flatley said. “We wanted to let them know that the actions of a few do not represent us all in this community.”

A freshman history class taught by Sarah Lee begins their studies on the Boxer Rebellion amid the return from the holiday break. Freshmen students have been learning to adjust their schedules for the workload from multiple classes. “It’s very different, there’s a lot more free range, freshman Jordynn Lee said. “The teachers give us a lot more freedom, and the students are very different too.”
Freshmen reflect on the academic transition from middle school to high school
Junior exchange student Anna Guthmann and sophomore Miguel Kast Puga moved to Wayland in the middle of Aug. from countries outside of North America. The bottom image shows Kast Puga standing with his dad in Santiago, Chile, and the top right photo shows him with a friend. The top left image is from Guthmanns school in Munich, Germany. Both have had to adjust to the new environment, academics and language change. “On my first day of school, a lot of people came up to me and introduced themselves,” Guthmann said. “It was really fun.”

On Tuesday, Nov. 23, the Alliance Club hosted Anonymous Ask, an event in the auditorium where WHS students asked panelists about sex, gender, relationships and many other topics. The event was held entirely in the dark, except for lights on the panelists, to use anonymity as encouragement for students to ask questions that they otherwise may feel too awkward or uncomfortable to ask. I definitely feel that there’s a big need [for this event],” librarian assistant and co-advisor of Alliance Kassie Wright said. For one, this school teaches abstinence, which is great and I definitely think is good, but we also have to be realistic and know that there are kids who are going to be practicing sex and this is a way to teach them safe sex, safe gender, safe things about their relationships [and] any type of thing that they may not have known.

Brande is also honoring Balkin off the ice with a petition for USA Hockey to mandate neck guards. I wrote his initials and number on my stick, Brande said. [Balkin] was super selfless, he would rather see you succeed than succeed himself.

Sophomore Giovanni Sebastianelli flies through the 600 meter at a meet located at Boston University. “I am so glad we are starting track meets again because after training, its nice to compete against other athletes,” senior captain Lauren Medeiros said. Sebastianelli was able to obtain a new personal record during this race, along with many of his teammates. This was Waylands first meet of the season.

Senior football captain Nick Dresens readies himself for his opponents next play. For the past three years, Dresens has been a largely unstoppable defensive force for the Warriors. I see my greatest strength as being well-rounded, Dresens said. I’m able to defend in the run game as well as drop back into pass coverage and cover receivers and running backs.

Senior Luke Tacelli prepares for the upcoming season. The football season was pushed back due to COVID-19. I am really excited for this upcoming football season because I have worked really hard for it and been waiting for a long time, Tacelli said.

Senior Eric Zhang attempts to overtake the attacking player without violating the COVID-19 restrictions. Zhang was a starting center back, a position which he has played for only two years. “When I moved to varsity, I moved from a midfielder to a defender,” Zhang said. “It was probably due to a shortage of defenders and an abundance of midfielders. No one wants to play center-back. You simply dont get a lot of recognition and you missout on being able to dribble, shoot, and the other more fun aspects of soccer. So getting into the mindset that I had to do my job and could only do my job was hard at first.”
