Breaking News: Wayland boys varsity tennis team wins MIAA state championships
WHS alumni Lizzy Francis and Sam Goldstone began the process of creating a stand alone race class for freshmen in 2020. “I think that a large issue with this country in general, honestly, is just [people] being uneducated and being unaware of different experiences,” WHS alum Lizzy Francis said. “I think that [by] bringing awareness to these social situations, we become better people, and we create a new generation of people that are kinder to each other, willing to listen and willing to be advocates for those who cant be advocates.”

2021 – 2022 Year in Review
Junior Nina Wilson recycles kitty litter buckets to make flower tubs. “A lot of our stuff is donated by the community,” STEMS co-founder Cassie McGonagle said. “Almost all of our vases are donated by the community, and we give back to the community in that way too.”
STEMS: a blooming business
Stop Asian Hate signs rest on lawns across Wayland and surrounding towns. “I designed the signs, I had them produced by a company and then I distributed them,” Wayland resident Jun Wan said. “I sent the news out, and people came by and picked it up from my yard. Suddenly, they were all gone, and now I see them all over [Wayland].”

The girls lacrosse players cheer on their teammates from the sidelines during the game. This season, many WHS sport teams have experienced success in the early stages of playoff season and are moving forward into the next rounds of the MIAA tournament.
WHS Playoff Preview
Wayland and Westford Academy collectively participated in race workshops during the week of May 11 due to a racist incident at a girls basketball game back in January. “We did not have a goal of solving the issue, but we hope some students will realize that taunting at games is not acceptable,” Athletic Director Heath Rollins said.
Wayland-Westford race workshops: Taking the next steps
The girls varsity four boat rows at regionals and qualifies for nationals. The Wayland-Weston crew team will be sending three boats to the 2022 Youth National Championships, which will be held in Sarasota, Florida from June 9 to June 12. I think it will be really fun to spend time with my teammates in Florida, and also get a tan, but I think that the racing part of it will be really exciting since there are so many clubs and teams competing there, junior Sophia Xie said.

Senior Lucas Pralle emerges from the water to take a breath during his 100 meter butterfly event at states. Pralle came in first place at states in his event. It feels amazing to be a part of a team that has performed as well as we have, Pralle said. Everyone puts in the work in practice and our coaches work tirelessly to train and guide us to be the best swimmers we can be.

Freshman Annie McQuilkin takes a foul shot at a girls varsity basketball game against Bedford. McQuilkin has been passionate about playing basketball since elementary school. I started playing basketball in third grade, right off the bat, I just loved the sport, McQuilkin said. I was always practicing all the time.

Chow concluded that this was one of the hardests projects she’s done all year. “Everyone else was making something flat, like a landscape, or a medal, but I wanted to do something different, Chow said. It took time and sweat, but I had a blast.
