With Wayland High School’s course selection process approaching, some students are choosing to explore elective classes. Ranging from Advanced Placement (AP) government to journalism, electives are optional or additional classes available to WHS students that differ from WHS’s average classes. WHS’ Connect Program and innovation courses are two electives which might catch some students’ eyes when undergoing the course selection processes.
WHS’ Connect Program is a English and History class at WHS that focuses on project-based learning. History teacher Erin Lehmann, special education teacher Jeff Blue and English teacher Edmund DeHoratius crafted this course in 2017 with the aim of creating an alternative learning experience for students. Through projects, field trips and guest speakers, this program teaches students lessons on communication, research, creativity and problem solving. The Connect Program is only open to seniors.
The innovation courses are open to all students, and are taught by teacher Hayes Hart-Thompson. The innovation courses were created to help students understand social impact and make sustainable change. The courses focus on hands-on learning concerning innovation, design and engineering. Like Connect, the innovation courses are project-based classes.
