On Friday, Feb. 2, METCO coordinator and Cultural Identity Group Seminar teacher Mark Liddell presents a slideshow he made on Black history as a winter week event. I work with students in the METCO program, and I teach in affinity class called Cultural Identity Group Seminar and in that class, we cover Black History throughout the entire year, Liddell said.

Brooke Doire presents to students in the lecture hall about her grandmother’s experience in the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. Doire’s grandmother, Betty Robinson, ran and won medals in the Amsterdam Olympics in 1928 and the Berlin Olympics in 1936. “[The message of this presentation is] to be resilient and to take things that look like impossibilities and turn them into possibilities by reaching out to those people that you trust and making a plan to get there,” Doire said.

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) talked to the sophomores about how to support LGBTQ youths and understand their difficulties. One of the speakers, Ethan Sobel, spoke about his struggles with coming out in high school and college. “It wasn’t okay in the locker room, it wasn’t okay in the orchestra and it wasn’t okay in the classroom,” Sobel said.
