Pop star Tate McRae released a new single called “It’s ok I’m ok.” After being released on Sept. 12, the single has received positive feedback for its catchy lyrics and relatability. McRae is a great performer, using her voice and dancing ability to better entertain her fans during concerts.
She has recently been compared to the icon Britney Spears because McRae showcases very similar talents to Spears. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR) at the MTV Video Music Awards, McRae praised Spears and named her as one of her role models. At the 2024 Video Music Awards held on Sep. 11, McRae channeled her inner Britney Spears by wearing a black mini Roberto Cavalli dress that replicated Spears’ VMA look by Dolce & Gabbana in 2001.
McRae is known for her emotional ballads, heartbreak and self-loathing songs. This new release is more upbeat compared to some of her slower songs. Still, “It’s ok I’m ok” is about heartbreak, moving on and healing. The song starts off by saying, “See you so excited, you got him locked down, you’re movin’ like I did before I found out,” which explains the emotional connection she once had with her ex-boyfriend that now plays as a bitter thought in her mind.
In late August, McRae performed a concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City and surprised her fans by singing “It’s ok I’m ok,” which was unreleased at the time. She was queued for one of her top hits, “Greedy,” to come on, but instead, an unfamiliar tune began playing. The positive reactions from her supporters created an urge for the song to be released.
The song’s grasping and empowering chorus, “it’s okay, I’m okay, had him in the first place” is a statement of self-love and growth. The lyrics, “I don’t want him anyway, girl, take him,” show that McRae really doesn’t care about what her ex-boyfriend does anymore.
As for the music video, McRae describes it as being ‘ballsy’ and daring. The dance from McRae’s performance at Madison Square Garden blew up on TikTok. She performed the same dance routine in the music video.
The journey from jealousy to independence is interesting and inspiring for her audience. Throughout her music, McRae continually promotes the importance of self-worth to her fans. This song set the tone for a new era for McRae, and I can’t wait for her to release more new music.
