Three Wayland High School (WHS) teams remain in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association playoffs. The teams that moved on were boys soccer, girls volleyball and football. They look to continue their success in the tournament.
On Nov. 6, the girls volleyball team swept Greater New Bedford 3-0, and are now in the Elite Eight hosting Bishop Fenwick on Friday Nov. 8. Boys soccer is playing Marblehead at the WHS turf on Nov. 7. Football is playing No. 7 seed Burlington on Friday Nov. 8 away.
The boys soccer team finished 7-7-2 which landed them No. 7 seed in the MIAA Division II power rankings. Some players including senior captain Jack Gavron emphasized their excitement for the playoffs.
“I wouldn’t say I’m very nervous, more excited,” Gavron said. “Playoff atmosphere is totally different from the regular season, and is what we all look forward to.”
Some players believe that the only way to enjoy playoffs and winning, is by putting in the work beforehand.
“The most helpful thing will be putting in the work in practice and buying into the practice plan before games,” Gavron said. “We have worked a lot on our fitness and overall shape on the field. I expect us to go far in the playoffs this year.”
The girls volleyball team finished their season with a record of 13-4, which landed them at the No. 3 seed in Division III of the MIAA playoffs.
“I am definitely the most nervous about keeping the team’s energy up,” senior volleyball player Lila Berg said. “The most helpful thing will definitely be how close our team is and how everyone is so supportive on and off the court. We have worked a lot on being aggressive and playing our own game against every team no matter their ranking.”
Some players feel home court games are more comfortable to play in because the environment is better when they know more people are cheering them on, rather than being against them.
“We are going into this year’s playoffs with a higher rank and home court advantage for more games,” Berg said. “I think our team has been really resilient and that is definitely a good sign that we can keep fighting and make it to the semifinals.”
The varsity football team ended with a record of 7-1, landing them in the No. 10 seed in the MIAA Division IV. The first round match up will be against No. 7 seed Burlington High School. Sophomore Brajae Whalton emphasizes how important the brotherhood of the football team is.
“I think the brotherhood and chemistry we have is very important and will impact how we play during the playoffs,” Whalton said.
