This month’s artist is senior Amelia Lang. Lang has been dedicated to art since she was young and has since taken multiple art courses throughout her years at Wayland High School.
How long have you been doing art?
“I guess you could say I’ve been doing art for my whole life. Even when I was little I always loved arts and crafts and doing hands-on learning. I think that I really got into it when I started doing it as an elective in high school and started participating in NAHS.”
Where and how did you discover your passion for art?
“I’ve always just been more of a creative person and always enjoyed hands-on things since I was little, but I think my grandfather brought out a lot of my interest. He was an artist and did a variety of things like paintings, sketches and sculptures. He always pushed me to explore my artistic talents. I also looked up to him and his art a lot. He was really talented and a lot of his work impressed me.”
What art courses have you taken at WHS?
“Freshman year I took painting and then drawing, and then I joined Art 2 sophomore year, Honors Art 3 my junior year, and now I am in Honors Art 4.”
Why do you like art?
“I like art for many reasons. There’s so much you can do with it and often it is calming to me. You’re still being productive and creating something while unwinding and relaxing. It also just never ends. You can never really get bored of making art. There are so many different kinds of mediums and things to draw and create.”
Has your art style changed over the years?
“I don’t think I’ve ever really had a style, I just kind of roll with what I’m feeling like doing. I definitely have tried new mediums as time has gone on. I’m currently using embroidery for my current art project which is something that I’ve only worked with a few times in the past.“
Where do you find inspiration for your artwork?
“I just pull it from what’s going on around me. I appreciate the freedom that there is in art and so I just like to create whatever I’m feeling like creating in that moment. My current theme for my art class is nostalgia, and I definitely found my inspiration from my current life as a senior about to graduate.”
What was your favorite piece of art you’ve ever made? What are you most proud of?
“When I was around 12 or 13 years old I was taking these pottery classes in Framingham. While none of the things I ever made are that impressive, I think that the things I would make in those classes are what I have been the most proud of. It’s a very difficult process and I feel like I would work hard for what I made, and I can still remember how happy I felt bringing home the new things I had made.”
