On Friday, Feb. 7, the Wayland girls varsity basketball team played Newton South High School for its 11th annual Coches vs Cancer game. After a long game, the Warriors lost with a score of 31 to 46. The game is hosted each year in order to honor the late Jim Griffin and to raise money towards the American Cancer Society. Griffin was a coach for the girls basketball team for many years before he ultimately passed away from cancer. The game serves as a way to show Griffin respect, honor his legacy and bring awareness to the fight against cancer. The game also serves to honor people in the Wayland community who have either battled cancer or know someone who has. Attendees were able to add the names of people who have lost their battle to cancer to a wall called the “Honor Wall.”

Before the game starts, each team has its starting lineup announced. To start the Wayland lineup, senior captain Annie McQuilkin ran onto the court and was greeted by senior Salma Dwidar with a special handshake. Dwidar stands in front of the team and greets each of the starting lineup with their own personalized handshake.
