On Thursday, April 17, the girls varsity lacrosse team defeated Acton-Boxborough High School (AB) with a final score of 11-3. Coming into the game, Wayland held a record of three wins and two losses, while AB had a record of three wins and three losses. According to the players, the game was expected to be competitive.
First quarter:
AB won the opening draw, but senior captain Jillian Mele, who is committed to play lacrosse next year at the University of Vermont, checked the ball out of the stick of an AB player. With Wayland in possession, Mele ran down the field, breaking away from the defense and scored the opening goal two minutes and 30 seconds into the game. Wayland maintained momentum and less than 30 seconds later, senior Lily Cerne scored the second goal of the game. Wayland won the next draw and had possession in the offensive zone. Senior captain and Union College lacrosse commit Jane Tardif was fouled, leading WHS to its first penalty shot of the game, but the shot was missed and kept the score 2-0. AB wasn’t able to sustain much offensive pressure for the remainder of the quarter and Wayland scored two more goals ending the first quarter with a score of 4-0.
Second quarter:
The second quarter began with a frantic scramble for the draw. Wayland briefly gained possession but AB quickly took control after checking a Wayland stick. That possession was short-lived as Wayland regained the ball. Junior Mackenzie Morris broke through the AB defense after a pass from junior Sofia DiCarlo, charged into the eight-meter, and scored her second goal of the game with a shot over the goalie’s head. Although Wayland won the next draw, AB gained control and scored its first goal of the game with nine minutes and 16 seconds to go before halftime. AB continued to put on the pressure but failed to convert due to Wayland’s defense. AB got a yellow card for misconduct and, as a result, Wayland controlled possession and scored on a low shot. Senior Cate Ellebogen followed with a quick goal after a strong pass. Wayland scored again off an intercepted clearing attempt by the AB goalie, but AB responded with two goals near the end of the second quarter. At halftime, Wayland led 8-3.
Third quarter:
AB came out strong after the half but failed to convert on a breakaway and Wayland took over. AB then committed several infractions in their defensive eight-meter arc giving Wayland three penalty shots. After Wayland missed two, Morris scored on the third. AB tried to regain their composure and took two shots. One missed and the other was saved by sophomore goalie Frankie Zilembo. Zilembo cleared the ball up to Ellenbogen, who passed to Tardif, who found senior Sky Kilmon for the goal. Wayland won the next draw but play stopped when Mele was hit in the head by an AB player who was carded for the infraction. The game resumed after Mele was subbed but then Tardif got carded for a delay. AB took a shot during the man-up but Zilembo made another save. Each team had a late chance before the end of the quarter but only AB was able to capitalize with a between-the-legs-goal in the closing seconds of the quarter. The quarter ended with Wayland up 10-3.
Fourth quarter:
AB won the opening draw of the quarter and had time in the offensive zone but missed multiple shots. One shot landed on goal but Zilembo saved it and cleared the ball out. This led to Wayland going on offense and sophomore Somerby Newton made a quick pass to Kilmon who scored. Wayland continued offensive pressure but its next shot on goal was saved by the goalie who cleared it to a teammate. The remainder of the game had a lot of back and forth but in the final minutes of the game, Wayland played keep away and maintained possession to run out the clock. Wayland won with a final score of 10-3.
The girls varsity lacrosse team has a tradition where they award the “Player of the Game” a toy dog named Rachel to take home until the next game. The winner of Rachel was Morris after scoring three goals.
