This month’s artist of the month is freshman Sophie Chen. Chen has had a passion for art for a long time and has since developed her art throughout the years.
When did you start doing art?
“I’ve been drawing since a young age, around early elementary school, but it was more editing photos that I thought already had character.”
Where and how did you discover your passion for art?
“The passion came more in the form of wanting to turn stories into real people.”
Since you started, has your art style changed?
“Definitely. I’m still experimenting with my art style, so it’s still changing and probably won’t stop anytime soon.”
Why do you like art?
“It’s a way to visualize things that you otherwise can’t visualize. It’s kind of like bringing them to life.”
How long does each piece of art take you?
“Every piece of art that I make usually takes three hours at the bare minimum, and I’m never satisfied with that. So I can take up to 40 hours on these which can spread across multiple months.”
Where do you get inspiration for your art from?
“I used to use Pinterest a lot, but now I’ll find creators on Instagram and save their works to look at later”
What are your favorite art styles or the ones you’re best at?
“I like those that use a lot of colors and I tend to lean towards a more semi-realistic style.”
What is your favorite piece of art that you’ve made?
“If I were to pick a favorite it would always be my most recent piece of art because I always strive to improve.”
