This month’s artist of the month is freshman Sophia Wan. Wan has been practicing art since she was young and draws her inspiration from various things, such as nature and her emotions.
How did you get into art?
“I think I first started doing art like most other kids, just doodling on papers in class. I only really started to get more serious about it when my parents saw that I was decent at it and enjoyed it, which was when I was around eight or so.”
How did you get good at art?
“I got good at art through practice and a lot of overview of the most fundamental parts of art. Other than that kind of practice, it’s a lot of solo work of just making small doodles on school work that helped me develop a sort of style or technique for art.”

What are your favorite art styles?
“I personally don’t have a favorite art style, as I like to hop around and just go with whatever I feel like doing.”
How long does each piece of art take?
“It varies on how long a piece of art can take. At times when I’m very motivated, it can just take me days to a week depending on complexity. Other times, it takes me way too long to even remember when I started a project.”

Where do you find your inspiration?
“I find my inspiration primarily in just everyday things. I’ve always been interested in nature, so on projects I do for fun, I do lots of landscapes and such. Most inspiration for me comes from everyday life such as emotions and the things I see.”
Why do you like art?
“I enjoy art as it is an outlet for my creativity and, at times, emotions. It’s always been very fun for me and it’s nice to see my progress throughout the years. Through art I can sort of make a small diary of my life and see what [interests] me in every stage of it.”
