On Monday, June 2, the girls varsity lacrosse team defeated Chicopee High School with a final score of 21-5. This was the first game of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division III playoffs for Wayland. Heading into the playoffs, Wayland was ranked No. 4 in Division III, with a record of nine wins and nine losses, while Chicopee had a record of 15 wins and two losses.

Wayland started the game off with senior Cate Ellenbogen winning the first draw. With possession of the ball, Ellenbogen ran down the field to set up a play where she passed the ball to senior captain Jillian Mele to score the first goal of the game. Mele went on to score three more goals, as well as one assist. At the end of the first quarter, Wayland was winning 6-1.

In the second quarter, Wayland increased its lead to double digits. With four minutes and 29 seconds left on the clock, senior captain Jane Tardif scored the 11th goal for Wayland. Only minutes later, with 42 seconds left in the second quarter, junior Mackenzie Morris scored the 12th goal of the game. The second quarter ended with Wayland winning 12-3.

With Chicopee starting the third quarter down nine goals, their defense became extra tight, causing them to commit several penalties against Wayland. These penalties gave Wayland players the opportunity to set up some eight-meter shots, causing Chicopee to struggle with defending in front of the net. The quarter ended with Wayland ahead by 14 points.

During the fourth quarter, Wayland was able to maintain their lead. The comfortable lead allowed Wayland to set up around the goal and pass to all their offensive teammates. Keeping possession of the ball in the opponents territory allowed Wayland to use different plays to score. This tactic resulted in another three goals for Wayland.

As soon as the fourth quarter buzzer went off, the celebration for Wayland began. The final score was 21-5. With this win, the team will move on to the next round of playoffs. Wayland’s next game was on Wednesday, June 4, against Old Rochester Regional High School, and they won with a final score of 16-3.

At the end of the game, sophomore Audrey Nugent was awarded a toy dog named Rachel as she was named the MVP of the game. Nugent received this recognition for her excellent effort in combination with scoring three goals.
