On Monday, June 2, the boys varsity volleyball team beat Greater Lowell Tech in all four sets, advancing them into the Elite Eight of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) playoffs. Wayland won the first set 25-20, the second set 25-18, lost the third set 25-19 and finished the game off with a 25-8 win in the fourth set. Junior captain Finn Bell led Wayland with 21 kills, two aces and four digs. With the win, Wayland is set to play Marlborough High School in the Elite Eight. The game will be held on Sunday, June 8, at 5 p.m. at Wayland High School.
Play of the game:
Are you allowed to kick the ball in volleyball? Yes, you are, and that’s exactly what junior Dylan Engelhardt did to keep the play alive about midway through the first set. After a deflected spike from Greater Lowell, Engelhardt found himself on the ground and still managed to kick the ball over the net to keep the rally going. The rally finished with a kill by Bell in a play that left both the Wayland bench and the audience amazed.
