The varsity football team comes off of a successful 2024 season, finishing with a record of 9-2, with one win away from going to the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division IV semi finals. Now fast forward to 2025. The team lost 18 seniors from last year, including Wayland’s single season rushing yard leader: Max Dresens. Not only that, but Wayland football also moved from Division IV to Division III due to last year’s performance.
“It’s a really young team [this year], with only seven seniors,” junior captain Aidan Curry said. “A lot of juniors are going to have to step up, but I think we have a good group overall, and I think even though we’re young, we could still be pretty good.”
Unlike last season, the captains are made up of some underclassmen, rather than just seniors. The team is split with two junior captains, Curry and Brajae Walton, and two senior captains, Dylan Engelhardt and Alex Evangelista.
“I feel like it can be a little difficult sometimes because you’re not the oldest person on the team when you’re a junior captain, but you still have to be able to talk to the seniors,” Curry said. “You’re really just trying to keep a positive attitude and make sure everyone’s dedicated to the team and supportive of each other.”
Every summer, the team travels to Camp Caribou in Winslow, Maine to prepare for the season. This four day long trip gives the team an opportunity to prepare for the season, as well as bond as a team.
“Caribou is a good way to make some friends [and] become tight with your teammates,” Curry said. “It’s a good way to start practices, and I like the light and almost easy way where we don’t feel the normal stress of when you’re at home on the turf, and it’s two hours of all grind.”
The team opens their season on Friday, Sept. 5 at the WHS turf against Holliston at 7 p.m.. This is the first home game of the season, meaning that it’s “youth night”, consisting of both the Wayland youth football and cheer teams.
“The team is pretty locked in, pretty dedicated,” Curry said. “I really like who I’m working with, and I really like the direction the team is going.”
