On Friday, Sept. 5, the varsity field hockey team beat Arlington Catholic High School 5-0 in the first regular season home game. Wayland was dominant throughout the game, as Arlington had trouble getting the ball onto Wayland’s side of the field.
As it was Wayland’s first home game, there was a spirited atmosphere surrounding the turf, as some of the players’ family and friends came to watch.
First quarter:
Wayland had main possession for almost all of the first quarter, dominating Arlington’s side of the field. There was only one instance where Arlington was able to push onto Wayland’s half.
Junior Melina Antun scored Wayland’s first goal, just four minutes and 15 seconds into the game. Wayland had other opportunities to score, yet Arlington’s goalie made some effective saves, rejecting some of Wayland’s shots. In the final seconds of the first quarter, sophomore Mackenzie Grogan scored for Wayland, changing the score to 2-0.
Second quarter:
The second quarter started pretty similarly to the first, with Wayland controlling most of the possession. However, Wayland’s balls couldn’t break past Arlington’s goalie during the entirety of the quarter.
At halftime, the score remained 2-0, with Wayland in the lead.
Third quarter:
Sophomore Addie Cooper scored about 3 minutes into the third quarter, making the score 3-0. Wayland continued to dominate Arlington’s side of the turf, but couldn’t capitalize on several chances to score.
The score was 3-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Fourth quarter:
Senior captain Kate Goodman scored about 3 minutes into the fourth quarter putting Wayland in a four point lead to Arlington. With under a minute left, Cooper scored her second goal of the game, putting the icing on the cake, as Wayland won 5-0. Wayland clearly dominated this game on the offensive standpoint and left Arlington with little to no chances to score.
The final score was 5-0, with Wayland getting their first win of the season. Wayland’s next game is on Monday, Sept. 8 at Milford High School.
