On Saturday, Sept. 6, the boys varsity soccer team beat Dearborn STEM Academy, with a final score of 1-0 in their first home game of the season. Facing Dearborn ended with a less drastic difference in points compared to Wayland’s match against Tewksbury, scoring one goal. Wayland’s defense played a key role in preventing Dearborn from scoring.
First half:
Wayland’s starting line-up was junior-heavy, with seven of the 11 players being juniors. The first half had a lot back and forth on the field between Wayland and Dearborn, along with Dearborn having one unsuccessful corner kick. With 23 minutes left in the first half, junior Tobias Kylberger attempted a goal that was saved by the Dearborn goalie. There was strong defense by both teams, resulting in the score staying 0-0 at the end of the first half.
Second half:
A penalty on Dearborn from a play with senior captain Will Klautky gave him, along with the rest of the team, a chance to score early in the second half. However, Dearborn’s goalie saved Klautky’s shot, keeping the score 0-0. A penalty kick by Dearborn, with 25 minutes left in the game, was saved by sophomore Harry Stein. Junior Max Rainville attempted a shot, with under 13 minutes left in the half, that was just high of the goal. The strong defense continued between both teams, until just five minutes left in the game, where junior Sawyer Miles scored a header off of senior captain Max Walsh’s corner kick.
“I felt like that was an amazing moment for me and the team,” Miles said. “I just felt proud of myself that I was able to help the team secure victory, because we worked really hard the whole second half to get that goal.”
The final score was 1-0. Wayland is now 2-0 on the year and will face Natick on Friday, Sept. 12 at home.
