On Wednesday, Sept. 10, two students were injured in a shooting at Evergreen High School in Colorado. The suspect fatally shot himself following the attack.
Both victims and the suspected shooter were immediately hospitalized following the attack, leaving one victim in life threatening condition. The other victim is said to be in stable condition as of Wednesday evening, according to multiple reports.
The alleged shooter was confirmed dead through a social media post from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office.
Police were at the scene within five minutes and found the suspected shooter quickly, according to the sheriff’s office spokesperson Jacki Kelley.
Students were immediately cleared from the scene following the attack, as the school was placed on lockdown. Parents and students were told to reunite at a nearby elementary school.
The shooter was a 16 year old male, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office reported that there were hundreds of witnesses, with the school enrolling about 900 students. They also said that it was unclear as to whether the victims were targeted.
Columbine High School, where one of the deadliest school shootings occurred in 1999, is within the same school district as Evergreen High School. Jefferson Public School District superintendent Tracy Dorland issued a statement on Wednesday evening saying that the shooting can not be portrayed as “just another tragic incident” and that “the pain of this incident reopens old wounds.”
“I know we always say not again, but here we are,” Kelley said in a statement.
Following the attack, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis issued a statement saying that his heart “goes out to the victims and their families as they grapple with this senseless act of violence.”
