On Friday, Sept. 12, the girls varsity volleyball team lost to Wellesley High School in all four sets. This was Wayland’s first loss of the year after starting the season 2-0.
“I think that this was one of our weaker games as a team just because we had low energy and weren’t as disciplined,” senior Mia MacLean said. “We’re excited to have the chance to play Wellesley again next Friday and put our best foot forward.”
First set:
In the first set, Wellesley took the lead with some strong serves. Throughout the set, both teams battled back and forth, leading to a 25-25 tie. Wellesley pulled ahead for the win, beating Wayland 28-26. This was Wayland’s first time losing a set this year, as they had won their first two games in straight sets.
Second set:
Wellesley was constantly up four to five points throughout the second set, however, defensive plays by Wayland contested Wellesley’s kills. Although Wayland put up a strong fight, the well-aimed hits from Wellesley players ended the set with Wellesley on top, 25-19.
Third set:
Wayland came into the third set with renewed confidence, upping their hitting game and taking the lead. The two teams traded blows, but Wayland took the lead at the end, winning the set 25-23 with some strong serves and solid defense.
Fourth set:
Following their win in the third set, Wayland came into the fourth set strong. Although Wayland’s serves and blocking were on point, they couldn’t keep up and lost the set 25-18, ending the game with a Wellesley win.
Wayland’s next game is on Thursday, Sept. 18 against Weston High School.
