On Wednesday, Sept. 17, the varsity field hockey team lost to Weston 1-4. Wayland entered this game with a record of 2-1-1, while Weston entered with a record of 2-0-3.
First quarter:
For most of the first quarter, it was a fairly even defensive matchup with both teams struggling to get shots on goal. At the end of the first quarter, the score remained at 0-0.
Second quarter:
The second quarter went back and forth at the beginning, with both teams getting some shots on the net. With eight minutes left in the quarter, Wayland sophomore Addie Cooper scored to put Wayland on the scoreboard. With a little under five minutes left in the quarter, Weston responded with a goal of their own to finish the second quarter with the game tied 1-1.
Third quarter:
With about 11 minutes left in the third quarter, Weston put the pressure on Wayland and capitalized with another goal to take the lead 2-1. With about nine minutes left, Weston scored another goal to extend their lead to two goals. Wayland’s defense seemed overwhelmed by Weston’s offensive attack, and Wayland had few chances to try and get some goals of their own. At the end of the third quarter, Weston held the lead at 3-1.
Fourth quarter:
With about 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Weston kept the pressure on Wayland with another goal to put them ahead by three. Weston continued to control most of the possession and didn’t allow many chances for Wayland’s offense to score. The final score was 4-1.
““I think the team hustled well even when we were losing,” Cooper said. “I hope that our passes can connect next game and we can take home the [win]”
Wayland looks to end their four game winless streak during their next game on Friday, Sept. 19 against Holliston.
