This month’s artist is senior Ava Knourenko. Throughout Knourenko’s years of art, she has expanded her craft past the canvas to nail art. Knourenko has taken four years of art classes at Wayland High School and works outside of school on her art pieces and nail business knrnknails.
How long have you been doing art?
“I would say [I’ve been doing art] my whole life, probably since I could hold a pencil. My favorite type is drawing with either a colored pencil or charcoal.”

What is your favorite piece that you’ve made?
“My favorite piece was probably that one with the vase and the flowers with the blue cloth and newspapers in the back. I am really proud of that piece because I worked really hard on it, and I like how it came out.”

How does doing art make you feel?
“I’ve always been very creative and when I do art it makes me feel very creative.”
Why did you start doing art?
“I started because my mom loves art, and she’s in a profession that involves art, so she got me started.”
How long have you been running your nail business?
“I have been running my business for a year and a half and it’s been really fun.”
Why did you start your business?
“I started because I would do my own nails most of the time, and my friends would ask me to do theirs too. Eventually I branched out to other people in the town and really anyone who reaches out and wants their nails done.”

What goes into running a nail business?
“What goes into [a nail business] is making sure I have all the supplies and materials every time I do someones nails so people can get what they want. I also need to make sure I have a variety of the supplies and enough of it to give people more options. I’m charging enough that I’m making a profit and have the money to buy all the different materials needed. I also communicate a lot with clients, use social media to post and promote my designs and respond to DMs from clients.”
How did you start doing nails?
“I started doing my own nails in 7th grade because I thought it would be a fun thing to do during quarantine when I didn’t have much else to do. As I got better over time, I started doing my friends’ and other people’s nails too.”
