On Monday, Oct. 20, the girls varsity field hockey team faced Waltham to kick off the final week of the regular season. The final score was 4-1, Waltham with the win. The loss brings Wayland’s record to 3-14-1.
First quarter:
The game started off with Wayland on defense after losing the coin toss. With seven minutes left in the first quarter, Waltham scored on a stroke, which is when a team gets a shot because of a penalty by the opponent inside the shooting circle. The referees deemed that Waltham would have had a “sure goal,” and the team was awarded a stroke. The quarter ended with Wayland down 1-0.
Second quarter:
In the second quarter Waltham dominated possession, with most plays transpiring in Wayland’s defensive zone. There were no penalties in this quarter, and Waltham scored two goals to make the score 3-0 Waltham going into halftime.
Third quarter:
Wayland came back defensively in the third quarter, with many shots on net and equal possession for both teams. Wayland almost scored on multiple shots, and Wayland kept Waltham to an even quarter, ending again at 3-0 Waltham.
Fourth quarter:
In the fourth and final quarter, Wayland surrendered one more goal with around eight minutes left on the clock. Wayland got on the board with 3:13 left in the game, when freshman Ella Berenson scored off a break. The final score was 4-1, with Waltham taking home the win.
“I feel like we got better as the game went on, and we didn’t give up,” sophomore Addie Cooper said. “We scored a goal in the fourth quarter because we had good communication getting the ball down the field and into the circle”
Wayland’s senior night is Friday, Oct. 24, at 5:45 p.m..
