The varsity football team powered their way to their first victory of the season on Saturday, Oct. 18, with a 48-21 win over Waltham.
Wayland’s offense was powered by junior quarterback Mikey Johansson, who threw 253 yards and scored four touchdowns, two being rushing touchdowns.
In the first quarter, Wayland jumped ahead 7-0, with a 56 yard passing touchdown from Johansson to junior captain Aidan Curry. Curry would finish the game with three receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown. Waltham responded with a 77 yard touchdown of their own, but Wayland ended the first quarter on top after a five yard passing touchdown was thrown from Johansson to junior captain Brajae Walton. At the end of the first quarter, Wayland was winning 14-7.
In the second quarter, Wayland extended their lead with a 29-yard touchdown pass from Johansson to junior Christian Montoya-Wantuil. Montoya-Wantuil would finish the game with two receptions for 77 yards and a touchdown. Shortly after, Johansson picked up his fourth touchdown of the game with an 11-yard rush before halftime. At halftime, Wayland was up 27-7.
Wayland’s success continued in the third quarter, as Johansson added another rushing touchdown and scored a 13-yard passing touchdown to senior captain Alex Evangelista to put Wayland ahead 41-14.
In the fourth quarter, Walton scored his second touchdown of the game, a 33-yard rush, to extend Wayland’s lead to 47-14. Although Waltham responded with a touchdown of their own, it was too late. Wayland took the win, with 48-21 victory, giving them their first win of the season.
On offense, Walton led Wayland on the ground with 11 rushes for 60 yards and one touchdown. Wayland’s passing game was dominant, with Johansson completing 15/25 passes for 253 yards and 4 passing touchdowns. Sophomore Alex Pearlman led Wayland in receptions, with six catches totaling 69 yards.
“It was really nice to play good offensively and defensively and get the win,” Johansson said.
Wayland will look to carry their momentum into their bye week before facing Lincoln-Sudbury (LS) on Oct. 30 at home for their senior night.
“We’re really excited about our upcoming games,” Johansson said. “LS is a very good team, but we’re going to compete with them and hopefully we’ll end up on top.”
