On Friday, Oct. 24, the girls varsity field hockey celebrated their senior night against Framingham High School. Wayland defeated Framingham 5-2, making their end of season record 4-12-2. The team will not be advancing to the playoffs.
Before the game, a celebration was held for senior captains Kate Goodman, Zoe Garcia, Sophie Hill and Kiera Hines. Around the turf, there were decorations celebrating the senior class and individual posters of each senior. The four juniors on the team were each assigned a senior to make a gift basket for, and the seniors were given tiaras to wear during the ceremony. As a part of the celebration, head coach Sarah Woodside gave a speech before each senior was called up and presented with flowers to take a photo with their family. At the end of the festivities, the game began around 5:15 p.m..
“[What] I will miss most [about the seniors] is their willingness to be involved,” sophomore Mackenzie Grogan said. “Whether it was with school drama or referee frustration, they were really good at listening and giving good advice.”
First quarter:
Wayland won the coin toss and chose to start with possession of the ball. Maintaining the 0-0 score, both teams played aggressively, with Wayland and Framingham shots being blocked and one corner penalty on Wayland. There was a significant amount of back and forth play, both teams consistently running up and down the field.
This quarter ended with a score of 0-0.
Second quarter:
Halfway through the second quarter, sophomore Addie Cooper put Wayland on the board with a goal on a drive. Two minutes later, freshman Julia Farley scored off an assist from Grogan to make the score 2-0. After another corner penalty on Wayland, Cooper scored her second goal of the game to extend Wayland’s lead to 3-0 right before halftime.
Third quarter:
Framingham’s defense was strong in the third quarter, with multiple shots from Wayland blocked. Goodman had a strong pass from the corner, almost resulting in a goal by Grogan, but it was saved by Framingham’s goalie. Hines had a strong drive down the field, and with 11 seconds left on the clock, freshman Ella Berenson scored to put Wayland up by four.
Fourth quarter:
In Wayland’s final quarter of the season, they didn’t disappoint. In the first two minutes Grogan scored off a pass from sophomore Melina Antun. With the score now 5-0 Wayland, the game entered running time for five minutes before Framingham scored off a corner to make it 5-1. “It was such a great season to go out on, and it’s always nice to end the season on a win,” Hines said.
