On Saturday, Oct. 25, the boys varsity soccer team battled Cohasset High School to a 2-2 tie on senior night. This game brings Wayland’s record to 4-6-3.

Before the game, a ceremony was held for the nine seniors on the team, with each player getting a certificate and a bouquet of flowers.

“It’s really what takes place before the game that truly matters,” boys varsity soccer coach David Gavron said. “It’s an opportunity for families to be with their son or sons, and the community gets to recognize these guys for their four years here at the high school.”

According to Gavron, some of the traits of this year’s senior class are its inclusivity and the tight-knight bonds created between the players.

“These guys have shown that they’re particularly close,” Gavron said. “[They] want to take care of each other, which is really special.”

First half:

The game started off with Wayland pushing offensively, repeatedly putting pressure on the Cohasset defense. The Wayland offense scored midway through the first half, with senior Max Walsh scoring to put Wayland up 1-0, which was the final score of the first half.

Second half:

The second half started similarly to the first with Wayland controlling most of the possession. Then, freshman Charlie Villatoro scored to put Wayland up 2-0. Wayland shifted to a defensive focus after Villatoro’s goal, but Cohasset managed to break through and score to make it 2-1. Almost immediately afterwards, Cohasset scored again to tie the game up 2-2. Gavron then called a timeout to regroup and refocus. Wayland launched a series of attacks in the final minutes of the game, but ultimately failed to score, ending the game 2-2.

The playoff bracket for boys soccer will be released on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 1:00 p.m..
