Following a successful first half of the season, the Wayland boys volleyball team has set its focus on the postseason. With every remaining regular season match affecting playoff seeding, every opportunity to earn a win is crucial. On May 18, the team beat a tough Boston Latin opponent at home, 3-0.

Wayland started off slow in the first set as Latin shot out to a 5-3 lead quickly in the set. However, Wayland quickly recovered, winning the set 25-17 off of a Boston Latin error.

Wayland displayed its abilities in the second set. Seniors Joseph Barymboem and Jake Moser set the tone, forcing Boston Latin into many mistakes. Barymboem ended the match with 10 kills and Moser with two, including the set clincher to win the second 25-22.

During the third set, all of the Wayland seniors were able to enter the match. Seniors Zach Mittelsteadt and Alex Kotzampoltaris both played a role in winning points for the team. However, the set proved to be tense as both teams were locked at 24 all, forcing extra points to be played. Wayland managed to squeak by, seniors Misha Boyko and Barymboem earning more kills to win the set 26-24.

As of May 23, Wayland sits at 10-6 (6-1 in league play), earning the fifth seed in the week’s MIAA power rankings. Following Wednesday’s match, the team picked up a victory against Cambridge Rindge and Latin, but lost to Needham in a tight match. As a result, Wayland is in a strong position to qualify for the tournament and make a deep run.

Wayland traveled to Newton South on May 24 and will face Cambridge Rindge and Latin on May 26 to close out their regular season campaign.
