The novel “Daisy Jones & The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid became a massive hit when it was released in 2019. The book covers the essence of Rock ‘n’ Roll and transports readers into the world of the 1970s through the eyes of a rock band trying to make it in the music industry. The book was written in an oral history format, or the retelling of events based on what people say, whether or not it’s true, as one large interview for a documentary. The story is centered around a band containing lead singers Daisy and Billy. The band Daisy and Billy are a part of is based on the famous band “Fleetwood Mac.” The band was originally just “The Six” until Daisy joined after trying to become an independent artist.

After millions of copies of the book were sold worldwide, the story caught the attention of Amazon Prime Video. Amazon picked the book up, turning it into a drama miniseries that took place in the 1960s and 1970s, following the rise and fall of the band in the novel. However, like all book to film adaptations, the Hollywood version of “Daisy Jones & The Six” includes some changes from the original story.

My favorite change is the plot development surrounding Daisy and Billy. Throughout the book, Daisy and Billy have a romantic connection that is never explored, leaving some readers feeling unsatisfied. However, in the miniseries, their relationship is explored more and they even share a kiss. Since the original book was written using quotes from the characters, not everything the characters told the interviewer was the truth. In the show, we not only get each character’s perspectives, but also what happened in flashback sequences. These sequences take up the bulk of the screen time, giving the show documentary elements.

Another change in the miniseries that enhanced the book was the music in the show. Since the book is about a rock band, the songs they talk about within the book are fictional, giving producers creative freedom while creating original songs. As chief songwriter, Grammy award-winning producer Blake Millis did a great job of bringing the band to life. Reid wrote out song lyrics from the novel and put them at the end of the book for readers to look through and make it seem like Daisy Jones & The Six was a real band. This included the title of the most prominent song in the book: “Honeycomb.” The series changed the title to “Look At Us Now,” which, in my opinion, makes it more interesting and prompts questions about Billy’s original muse. The song was originally based on Billy’s wife, Camilla, but the changes in the lyrics and the title contradict that. In the miniseries, Billy does not seem as in love with Camila compared to he did in the book. The miniseries makes it seem like Billy always had eyes for Daisy.

A seemingly insignificant change that turned out to be incredibly important was that Camilla took the famous album cover photo of Daisy and Billy rather than a professional photographer. I love this change because it shows how Camilla could see what was going on between her husband and his bandmate. The book paints her as more naive than I believe she is, and I love that the show demonstrates that Camilla isn’t just a bystander. In a way, it makes her more powerful.

For anyone who enjoyed reading “Daisy Jones & The Six” as a novel, I highly recommend watching the series. There are differences between the two, but in my opinion, the changes only elevate the story and help bring the band to life.
