Wayland High School Wellness teacher and football coach Scott Parseghian created his own sports broadcasting elective after working in the Wayland Public Schools system for 28 years. Parseghian’s love for sports pushed him to create a class where students could focus on the sports broadcasting aspect of journalism. When the elective was first offered in early 2023, students committed time outside of school, often meeting in WayCam, a non-profit community access studio, at night. Now, students meet three out of the eight-day letter cycles, but still devote time after school to filming home football and soccer games. In the future, Parseghian says that the class wants to eventually start filming more often, and work on filming recaps of Wayland sports, similarly to how ESPN films recaps for professional sports teams.
“I’m learning too,” said Parseghian. “I love all sports, high school sports especially. So getting to see all the kids passionate about [sports broadcasting] and learning to use all the cameras is awesome.”
