As the pandemic reaches its one-year mark, people are becoming more eager to find the light at the end of the tunnel by receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. But, as the Town is no longer receiving vaccine doses, it may become difficult for residents to get be inoculated. “A lot of people thought ‘I don’t care, I will go anywhere.’ I would’ve gone at two o’clock in the morning to get vaccinated,” math teacher Hannah Marton said. “I just wanted to get vaccinated and a lot of people are the same way.”
News Brief: Wayland Health Department suspends COVID-19 vaccinations
In a survey sent out to Wayland High School students, students thought of one word or phrase that describes or commemorates the past year. Among the most common words were unprecedented, Zoom and social distancing.
COVID-19: One year later
Three months into hybrid learning, students are learning how to adjust to a new style of schooling. I think that starting hybrid was confusing like what time class ended and what classes you had because they changed everything from before, sophomore Morgen Warner said. I think getting used to that took a little.
WHS students reflect on hybrid learning experience
As COVID-19 numbers continue to rise, the coronavirus infiltrates the life of some WHS students. Junior Ryan MacDonald felt the effects first hand as he contracted the virus and had to spend almost two weeks in quarantine. I woke up feeling awful, and I also couldn’t taste or smell anything, MacDonald said. Right then is how we assumed we had it, and then two days later we got our test results back as positive.
WHS students share their experiences with COVID-19
An emergency town meeting between the Board of Health, Board of Selectmen, school committee, town administrator, and other public health officials was held today to discuss how Wayland Public Schools would return to school on Jan. 4. After several hours of discussion, each board suggested to superintendent Arthur Unobskey that WPS should remain in hybrid format unless the school does not have sufficient medical coverage. All schools except the middle school, which will be remote, will hold in person classes on Monday.

Wayland Middle School science teacher Richard Battaglia is excited to run the 2021, Oct. 11, Boston Marathon since it has not been held in-person since 2019. Everybody [in the Boston Athletic Association Running Club] is psyched to run the marathon, Battaglia said. A lot of us really enjoy Boston and to miss it for 2020 and the spring was really hard.

The Class of 2022 celebrates their semi-formal, held at the Weston Golf Club. The Class of 2022 semi-formal was the last school dance hosted for Wayland students since the pandemic hit. The current junior class was not able to have a semi-formal last year and is in the process of planning its dance for this year despite a series of setbacks. “If we do have it at the high school, it’s not your ‘typical’ semi-formal,” Junior Class Vice President Samantha Tyska said. “I hope that our grade reacts to that and doesn’t get angry, [but are] more so appreciative of the idea that we’re able to hold an event for our class.”

The Youth 4 Period Equity Organization will hold a rally outside the Massachusetts State House Thursday, Sept. 23 from 4-6 p.m. to raise awareness for the I Am bill. “[The ‘I AM Bill’] is an expansive measure that would ensure free menstrual care to public schools, shelters, prisons and jails across Massachusetts,” Youth 4 Period Equity Co-Founder Hannah Swichtenberg said.

Senior football captain Nick Dresens readies himself for his opponents next play. For the past three years, Dresens has been a largely unstoppable defensive force for the Warriors. I see my greatest strength as being well-rounded, Dresens said. I’m able to defend in the run game as well as drop back into pass coverage and cover receivers and running backs.

Senior Eric Zhang attempts to overtake the attacking player without violating the COVID-19 restrictions. Zhang was a starting center back, a position which he has played for only two years. “When I moved to varsity, I moved from a midfielder to a defender,” Zhang said. “It was probably due to a shortage of defenders and an abundance of midfielders. No one wants to play center-back. You simply dont get a lot of recognition and you missout on being able to dribble, shoot, and the other more fun aspects of soccer. So getting into the mindset that I had to do my job and could only do my job was hard at first.”

Jason Shu: Another set toward success
Boys varsity lacrosse captain Michael Lampert cradles the ball as an opposing player attempts to steal the ball. He runs while using his size to his advantage, looking for an opening to throw the ball for a play. “I would say my biggest challenge has been people doubting my size,” Lampert said. “I have overcome this by doing extra workouts to show people that I can use my size to my advantage.”

For the next fall football season, the team will be receiving new and improved jerseys, so the players cherish the last moments in this iconic black and orange attire. Next year we have been informed that the spear will not appear on the new home black jerseys as it is racially insensitive, Derubeis said. I pointed at the spear because it’s the true symbol of Wayland football and we are the last group of seniors who ever get to play with it on.
